My First Blog Post

Welcome to AhTrek,

a place where you indulge in treks around the world.

Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.

— Oscar Wilde.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Ashley and I love to travel the world and explore different peoples, cultures, and places.

While traveling, I learn a lot about others and myself.

I will share some of my experiences with you here and I hope that I inspire you as the world has inspired me to be better and do more to help others.

I hope to publish posts that inspire hope, love, acceptance, and understanding for everyone everywhere.

This is the first post on my new blog. I’m just getting this new blog going, so stay tuned for more. Subscribe below to get notified when I post new updates.

Infinite Family Nkosi’s Haven

“Situated on a 2.5 acre plot of land just south of Johannesburg in the Alan Manor neighbourhood and currently accommodating 22 mothers and 121 children, of which roughly half are orphaned.
While our initial plans to develop the site as a care facility and residency for HIV infected mothers and their children was met by objections from many neighbouring sites, thanks to support from a number of key sponsors, we have since been able to create an energetic and positive environment for over 180 mothers and children at full capacity.”

Teboho Trust

“We provide personal empowerment, social development, educational support, economic development and wellness…”

Our Rutgers group arrived to find a small group of students of many different ages chatting with each other. They were curious about us as we too were curious about them. Once being escorted into a classroom we were introduced to David. David is a man to admire. He is the new leader and ground developer of Teboho Trust. He devotes his time, and WEEKENDS(!) to providing a space where “kids can be kids”.

We met some of the student participants of TT and were filled with warmth during a short discussion and connection circle. We spent time sharing something we each loved about our self and thought about what we want to be “when we grow up”.

After our discussions we took a walk around their block to see some of the neighborhood get to know some the students more. I was able to meet a young man, Gift, who wants to go to college and has many dreams of what to study!

It was a day full of cheer, inspiration, and self reflection that will not be forgotten.

day 6: eSwantini formerly Swaziland

To feel happy you should sing and dance with the sunrise each morning

This was a very moving and happy experience. We joined the performers for some dancing of our own! The TINGOMA TASE AFRICA (click TINGOMA to see and listen) group will actually be traveling to Brazil for a show in the near future!

Day 1: PLACES

Malay Community:

Bo Kaap

The origin people of Cape Town were the Malays. Their vibrant culture still lives on in Cape Town, South Africa.

Castle of Good Hope:

A story of joy, pain, tears, laughter, disappointment, fear, hope – and all the that characterize us as a nation.

Opened in1679, the Castle is the oldest surviving building in South Africa and has been the centre of civilian, political and military life at the Cape and the nation since.

City Hall:

A life-size bronze statue of a waving Nelson Mandela has been erected where the former statesman gave his first address as a free man in Cape Town on February 11, 1990.

Standing on the balcony of City Hall in Darling Street, the statue will now greet passing residents and tourists as well as well as hawkers who set up their stalls across the road at the Grand Parade every day.
